Haymaking with Charm

It is the time of year when busy activity can be observed in the lush mountain pastures. This process is called “bringing in the fodder,” and it is one of the most important tasks for farmers with livestock. Hay is essential as the primary feed for cows, sheep, and other farm animals during the long winter months. In summer, the blooming mountain meadows are mowed several times – depending on the weather – to ensure a sufficient supply for the cold season. After mowing, the grass is carefully dried by regular turning before it is either stored in the hayloft or pressed into round bales. This work impressively demonstrates the close connection between humans, animals, and nature.

The whole family gets involved – and often holiday guests, curious to experience life on a real South Tyrolean farm, lend a helping hand as well. Of course, our animal helpers are not to be missed: our cat, comfortably nestled in a wheelbarrow among the fragrant hay, brings a smile to everyone’s face. Its calmness and curiosity accompany the workday, making every break something special. To refresh and recharge, there are homemade juices, and a shady spot provides a pleasant place to relax.

Keeping an eye on the sky is an essential part of haymaking – because, despite modern weather forecasts, there is always the concern of unexpected raindrops. After all, the quality of the hay depends crucially on it being stored dry and intact in the barn.

After a hard day’s work in the fields and meadows, the balcony or terrace invites you to take in the breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain ranges of the Ritten. Even the farmer, relieved, finally steps down from the tractor – grateful and satisfied that another stage of the winter fodder supply for the animals is completed.
