The most common breeds in South Tyrol are: Fleckvieh, Braunvieh Swiss, Original Braunvieh, Grauvieh, Holstein and Jersey. Up to the age of 6 months it is called a calf, after which it is called an adult bull or heifer. Once she has given birth she is called a cow. The male is called a bull, while castrated bulls are called oxen. The main reason for castration is that oxen are more docile and easier to keep in groups. In South Tyrol, cattle are mainly bred for the production of milk and meat. Family farms in South Tyrol take care of an average of 15 cattle. A cow can give up to 60 liters of milk per day, but its production strongly depends on the breed, feed and age.
